Whale meat in Iceland

Iceland resumed commercial whaling in 2008, despite a small market for whale meat. Whaling has been taking place near whale watching areas, which threatens the animals that you may see on your trip. Whale watching is a humane way for coastal communities around Iceland to ‘utilise’ whales.

Please do not eat whale meat while you are here, as this encourages the hunting of whales.

Icelanders themselves are not eating much whale meat, just 1%* of the population claim to eat it regularly. Please do not support this industry, which damages whale watching and Icelands reputation overseas.
